SUNSCREEN FOR STAFFIES   <AND OTHER BREEDS>

Living in Arizona it’s crucial that we protect our skin from the sun but did you know that it’s just as important to protect your Staffie (and other breeds), as well? My old Staffie, actually had skin cancer so I know first-hand that it’s possible. Dogs love to sunbathe exposing their tummies and inguinal area (space between the back legs) to the sun which can cause sunburn which can lead to skin cancer. Not all dogs are prone to sunburns.  Any breeds like AMSTAFF’S that have pale noses, short or shaved coats or have pink skin are susceptible. I did some research and found out what to avoid and look for when protecting your pooch. Here is what you should look for in a pet sunscreen:

  • Stay away from Zinc Oxide as it is toxic
  • Should provide both UVA & UVB protection
  • Stick with natural or organic products
  • Opt for lotion instead of a spray
  • Try to keep it fragrance free

Brands that have been scientifically analyzed by the EWG (Environmental Working Group, ewg.org) and recommended:

  • California Baby Sunscreen- SPF 50
  • Burt’s Bee’s Chemical Free Sunscreen with Hemp Seed Oil – SPF 30
  • Avalon Organics Baby Natural Mineral Sunscreen – SPF 18
  • Aveeno Baby Continuous Protection  SPF 55

So keep your Staffie’s well protected in this AZ heat and happy sunbathing!!
